Antiques, Bed and Breakfast, Brenham Texas

August 5th, 2010 by Pamela Murski

Brenham Texas is known for its’ history, architecture, wineries, Blue Bell ice cream, shopping, restaurants and famous Fall and Spring antiques fairs.  True antique hunters also know we also have  several  antique shows throughout the year here locally.  At the most recent Summer show, held at the KC Hall just a couple miles from the Bed and Breakfast, I procured a new treasure that has already found a home on my pine harvest table.  This English Copper Warming Tray has a beautiful patina from years of service.  It will be put back in service during many of our Foodie events and cooking class adventures.

Brenham’s Lighted Christmas Parade

December 11th, 2009 by Pamela Murski

Every year in Brenham, Texas,  the first weekend in December is the big downtown Christmas Stroll with the lighted parade and  the first big weekend that the ranch is decorated for the season.   It is a fantastic way to start the Christmas season with wassail (or in my case “Spiked Hot Lemonade”), gingerbread houses, outdoor music & activities, the showing of an outdoor Christams classic  movie on the courthouse square, shopping late, Christmas plays at Unity Theatre  and,  of course, the lighted downtown  Christmas Parade!  The picture below gives you just a glimpse into some of the fun to be had this weekend each year.  There is a huge competition (for bragging rights only) to see who can come up with the best float.   The theme for the parade this year was Candy Lane Christmas and this float did  a great job of bringing the game of Candy Land to life! What you can’t see is that the gingerbread house puffs out sugar-cookie scented smoke…it was way  too cool!  Be sure to try our Spiked Lemonade recipe and reserve your 2 night stay at our ranch for this great event next year!  You don’t want to miss out!

Spiked Hot Lemonade

1 large can frozen lemonade
1 large can water (use lemonade can for measuring)
1 1/2 cups good quality vodka (Grey Goose)

Warm lemonade and water.  Add vodka and heat to your liking.   Use a fresh Rosemary sprig for swizzling and the taste gets even better!   Pour up and enjoy!

Sun Kissed Persimmons

October 22nd, 2009 by Pamela Murski

100_2526Like the first taste of delicious nectar, a sun-kissed ripe persimmon can not be compared to a store bought one!  I have harvested and enjoyed 4 in the last week and there are more to come…..  Persimmon Cream Custard may be in the offering if I can resist the temptation to eat it straight off the tree (as I am want to do) before getting them into my kitchen! If you can find these are your local farmers market, snap them up!  To pick them, make sure they are deep apricot orange in color and give slightly when pressure is applied.  The Hispanic culture uses them green and eats them as you would an apple.  I prefer them very ripe when they are at their peak in sugar content and melt in your mouth.  Eat skin and all!

Lemon-Simmon Custard

  • 1/2 c. of thin-skinned lemons, sliced paper thin and cut into quarters
  • 1/2 c. of orange juice
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 4 eggs, well beaten
  • 1/2 c. heavy cream
  • 1/2 c. persimmon puree (fresh ripe persimmons, skinned and pulp pureed)

Combine lemon, orange juice and sugar.  Allow to stand at room temperature for at least 2 hours or overnight, stirring occasionally.  Stir beaten eggs into lemon-orange mixture.  Pour into ramekins to within one inch of the top.  Put 1/2 inch of persimmon puree on top.  Bake for 35-40 minutes at 375 degrees until knife inserted near center comes out clean.  Remove from oven and allow to cool.  Meanwhile whip heavy cream with 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla.  Top custard with whipped cream just prior to serving.

Pumpkin Time & the Farmers Market

October 21st, 2009 by Pamela Murski

img_0060You know it is Fall when pumpkins start to make their appearance……these beauties were spied on one of my recent Saturday morning  trips to our local Brenham Farmers Market in downtown Brenham.  Also available were fresh handmade soaps, delicious canned  vegetables and fruits that looked so good you wanted to eat them straight from the jar, beautiful hand embroidered linens, handmade German noodles (of which I purchased 3 gallon baggies full!), fresh cucumbers, live plants, yummy homemade desserts and of course,  fresh  coffee from our local roastery, Independence Coffee, and much more…..
