Thinking About Weekend Getaways from Austin? Think of Us!

March 13th, 2015 by Pamela Murski

Sometimes the need to get away from everyday life is glaring. You don’t need a week vacation, just a quick weekend or overnight trip to break the routine and force yourself to relax without the distraction of your to-do list.  If you’re a resident of the beautiful Austin, Texas those moments probably tend to sneak up on you as there are so many wonderful things to do around the city. If you are looking for weekend getaways from Austin, consider the charming country bed and breakfast in Brenham, the Murski Homestead.

Just one hour and 45 minutes due east from Austin, Brenham is the perfect juxtaposition to your city life, and so close that leaving will hardly take any effort at all. The beautiful Washington County countryside offers an easy way of life perfect for a weekend away. Spend a day on the lake, checking out the market or sniffing the fresh wildflower air as you unwind and let the easy small town wash over you. If this doesn’t sound like a dream, maybe you just want to head straight to the Homestead’s outdoor spa after breakfast with a good book and a mind to rest. Otherwise, these are some great things to come check out in the Brenham area.

 Bluebonnet Season

Come April the Washington County wildflowers are in full bloom, and particularly the bluebonnets. With designated trails and roads to explore the fields blanketed in blues, yellows, and reds, Brenham and the surrounding area has become a destination for people who wish to take a day or two to appreciate the season change and celebrate new life. Another popular draw is the nearby Chappell Hill Bluebonnet Festival taking place April 11th and 12th all day. If you are coming to explore bluebonnet country and also love to taste local wines while traveling then you ought to explore the Bluebonnet Wine Trail as well!

Foodie Experiences

Weekend getaways from Austin – or anywhere for that matter – should always involve only the best food and drink, which is why you’ll particularly enjoy this rural foodie destination. At the Murski Homestead, you can take any number of the culinary classes offered to expand your knowledge of gourmet food and beverages. The Brenham Farmer’s Market and Home Sweet Farm Market are great places to check out the local produce, all sourced from within 50 miles of Brenham. You could even get yourself some veggies for the week ahead. The market also hosts Farm to Market Dinners each month, featuring local chefs and produce. Tickets are for sale on their website.

If you have a boat or fishing gear pack it up and head out to Brenham where you can spend a day on Lake Somerville, making for one of the most ideal weekend getaways from Austin imaginable. There’s nothing more relaxing than a weekend trip to the Texas country where you can forget about life for a few days. The accommodations at the Homestead are simultaneously luxurious and quaint and will make you feel right at home, especially when you wake up to the smell of a fresh-cooked gourmet breakfast.

Blue Bell Fun Run April 12th

February 1st, 2014 by Pamela Murski

Blue Bell Fun RunStart at Brenham High School and wind your way through scenic and historic Washington County. You’ll take the Trestle Trail through Brenham’s beautiful countryside, by the rolling hills covered in Bluebonnets. You won’t even know how hard you’re working as you cruise by these gorgeous scenic views! So what are you waiting for? Sign up now for the Blue Bell Fun Run. It’s set for April 12th!

It all began back in 1978 to benefit the Brenham High School Athletic Program. You’ll see the high school athletes out serving as volunteers to help support their programs. That includes baseball, track, cross country, volleyball, golf, football, softball, tennis and more. Brenham High School has been among the top 10 high schools in the Lone Star Cup Competition for the past several years.

So here are some race details… You can choose between a 5K or 10K individual or 5K or 10K team. There’s also a kids’ 1-miler! Again, it starts at Brenham High School on FM 2935 off of Loop 577 on the north side of town. The race routes are subject to change. For the teams, five or more make a team and awards will be based on the lowest cumulative total time from the first five runners from that team to finish.

A plaque and medal will go to the top overall male and female in the 5K and 10K, and medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group in the 10K, 5K and Kids’ 1-Mile. Trophies and medals will go to the top 5K and 10K teams, and all participants under age 12 will receive a Participant’s Medal. Organizers will announce all of the top medalists in the Kids’ mile, the top overall male and female winners in the 5K and 10K, the top 5K and 10K teams and the first place winner in each age division. All of the second and third place finishers can pick up their medals at the awards table.

If you’re ready to sign up, register now online. You can do so through Wednesday, April 9 at 11:59 p.m. Try to avoid race day registration as there will be lengthy lines and could delay you in getting to the starting line! You can pick up your packet on Friday, April 11th from 4 to 8 p.m. or on Saturday morning from 6:15 to 7:30 a.m. The Kids’ 1-Mile Run begins at 8 a.m., followed by the 10K at 8:30 and 5K at 8:45 a.m.

Now for the best part. Because Blue Bell Creameries are sponsoring the 36th Annal Blue Bell Fun Run, you can enjoy all the Blue Bell you can eat at the finish line! If that’s not a reason to sign up, we don’t know what is!

As you start planning and training for this fun event, don’t forget to reserve your stay with us at Murski Homestead Bed and Breakfast. Our new outdoor spa will be the perfect place for you to relax after the race!
