3 Things You Need to Know About the NCAA Men’s Final Four

February 16th, 2016 by Pamela Murski

NCAA-mens-basketball-tournament-courtWhen it comes to sporting events, the NCAA Men’s Final Four is on the top tier in the basketball realm, and this year the premier event is being held in Houston, TX, at NRG Stadium.

Just a short, scenic drive away is the little town of Brenham, TX, and the quaint but luxurious Murski Homestead. This bed and breakfast is a great retreat from the high energy surrounding the tournament, and with features like an outdoor spa, you will be able to relax regardless of whether your team was on the winning or losing side. But before you unwind, get your hype up with these five things you should know about the NCAA Men’s Final Four.

1. NCAA Men’s Final Four History

The NCAA Men’s Final Four has been around since March of 1939, when Oregon, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Villanova made it to the tournament. Since then, the annual event has evolved into the brand of March Madness. This popular phrase has taken over a month on the calendar. The term itself is believed to have come from an article and poem that Henry V. Porter wrote in regards to an Illinois high school basketball tournament.

The article was titled March Madness and published in the Illinois High School Association’s magazine in 1939, which happened to be the same year that the college tournament debuted. Three years later, Porter wrote a similar poem, and a line read, “A sharp-shooting mite is king tonight / The Madness of March is running.” The term wasn’t really discovered on a large scale until 1982, when a CBS broadcaster used it during his NCAA tournament coverage. From there, March Madness was born!

2. Final Four Fan Contest

Now you know about the history, but do you know about the other events that are going on in conjunction with the NCAA Men’s Final Four? Sure, the main event might be on the court, but CapitalOne is presenting a NCAA Men’s Final Four Fan Fest Contest that will include giveaways, concerts, interactive games, special appearances, autograph signings, and more. Held just down the road at the George R. Brown Convention Center, the Fan Fest is from April 1-4, while the Final Four itself is just the 2-4. You will be able to take photos with the championship trophy, snag autographs from some of your favorite players, and even win official Final Four merchandise. Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the event, and children under 12 are allowed in for free!

3. March Madness Music Festival

If your love for music is anywhere close to your love for basketball, you might consider heading to Discovery Green for the March Madness Music Festival. Past lineups have included artists such as Rihanna, Bruce Springsteen, Imagine Dragons, and Fergie. The lineup is still being confirmed for the 2016 rendition, but with such amazing past artists, the expectations are high. The festival is set to be spread out over three days, from April 1-3. The music starts in the afternoon and really gets kicking after the sun sets. Most importantly, the festival is completely free!

With over 70,000 fans attending the Final Four last year, this year’s numbers are only expected to increase. That means a lot of fans and a lot of crowds. While it’s enjoyable to revel in the hype, especially if your favorite team takes the trophy, it’s also nice to take a breather once everything is over. Murski Homestead bed and breakfast is just a couple hours away in a stretch of quiet, peaceful countryside that can calm your nerves or celebrate your joy with a relaxing getaway. Murski Homestead offers a luxury experience complete with Texan hospitality.

Thinking of Spending Thanksgiving in Texas?

September 28th, 2015 by Pamela Murski

thanksgiving in texasThere are many things that make Thanksgiving in Texas special, including the fact that it is presumed to be the home of America’s very first feast of thanks, which followed a treacherous Spanish conquest through the deserts of Mexico and the southwest. After 5 days in the arid climate without food and water, a band of 500 finally made it to the Rio Grande, where they celebrated with a meal of thanksgiving for their deliverance from the woes of the rugged and sparse countryside.

This spirit of Thanksgiving in Texas is still very much alive today though we are just as happy about football victories as we are for our small town sustenance. This mixing of the new and the old of our beloved United States makes Thanksgiving in Texas an ever enjoyable time of year to visit. Whether you want to explore the countryside in the beautiful temperate weather, root for your teams or explore the foodie scene in celebration of an eating holiday, you’re sure to find it here in Brenham.

Things to Do for Thanksgiving in Texas

  1. Chuy’s Christmas Parade
Held in nearby downtown Austin every Thanksgiving, Chuy’s Christmas Parade features giant inflatable balloons, holiday floats, classic cars, marching bands and, of course bringing up the rear is Santa Claus! For the past 11 years, the parade has been supporting Operation Blue which provides toys for underprivileged children in the area.
  2. Texas Foodie Experience
There are endless places to get out and enjoy locally sourced and produced food, whether you love craft beers, wines, or meats and produce. The Wine Trail consists of a grouping of local wineries who are open for visitors to explore, and for a local beer you head to Brazos Valley Brewing Company or the new Home Sweet Market Biergarten in downtown Brenham. The Murski Homestead offers very popular cooking classes and are sure to have a holiday theme in mind for the weekend of Thanksgiving in Texas.
  3. Football Football Football!
On the Friday after thanksgiving Baylor Bears will face off against the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs in what will be one of the deciding matches of the 2015 Big 12 Championship. If you aren’t going to make it to the actual game but happen to find yourself in Brenham for the weekend, there are many places to watch the game. The Ant Street Inn will be firing up their grill and opening their parking lot for a tailgate party at 2 pm in preparation for kickoff at 6:30. Don’t miss it!
  4. Live Music
Here in the country we love to head to a local watering hole in the evenings for some live music and tasty beverages. Take in the local culture during your Thanksgiving in Texas by doing the same at either Brazos Valley Brewing, The Stone Cellar, or at the Home Sweet Farm Market Biergarten over the weekend. See the town calendar for more specifics!

Are you convinced yet that Thanksgiving in Texas is a fine way to spend this holiday? If not, maybe you’ll just have to come check it out for yourself and let this beautiful countryside speak for itself.

Home Sweet Farm Has a New Biergarten!

Brenham, Texas has a long agricultural history dating back to before it was even incorporated. When the railroad came, Brenham gained more processing facilities and the town became a regional hub and supplier of many essential resources. As American industry increased, agriculture decreased, and the same was true in Brenham, Texas. About a century later, the advent of the Home Sweet Farm CSA program in 2004 was a big deal a departure from what locals were used to. Since, residents of Washington County have been increasingly aware of where their food comes from.

Since being reminded of the importance and worth of locally grown food, residents of Washington County have been increasingly interested in where their food is coming from. Home Sweet Farm has been expanding their local food movement ever since, with their latest addition to the business being the new downtown Brenham Biergarten.

About the Home Sweet Farm Market Biergarten

Serving their mission of the 50-mile food movement – in which they only source things from within a 50-mile radius of Brenham – the biergarten serves only locally made craft beers. They boast the largest selection of craft beers in all of Washing County and serve it alongside grilled bratwurst on pretzel buns with all kinds of fresh toppings and garnish that will make your mouth water – all locally made of course! The fresh and local model offers visitors an experience that is unique in that it is more than just sensory but also cultural as you get a taste for the area and its people.

home sweet farmThe Biergarten also hosts weekly events that have locals returning to unwind from the grind and enjoy the community. Friday nights are Spaghetti Western Movie Night, showing those cheesy, dubbed western flicks that are the perfect compliment to country-made craft beer after a long work week. On Saturday evening come out to enjoy free concerts featuring both local and regional musicians from a variety of backgrounds and playing many different genres. Some upcoming performers include The Kitowskis, Jack Carr, and Cody Ray Henry. Shows start at 8:30 and take place in the lovely courtyard. A few times a month you can also buy tickets for their Saturday night Farm to Market Dinners and have a great night out of food and music!

About Home Sweet Farm

Coming from generations of farmers, Brad and Jenny Stufflebeam and their two daughters, are passionate and talented farmers who love nothing more than providing their community with sustenance. The farm’s CSA program led eventually to them opening the downtown Home Sweet Farm Market, which is open every day, and hosts a weekly farmers market on Sundays. They sell products from local agricultural producers from around the area, carrying everything from fresh milk and cheese, to grass fed beef. After a successful start to the market, the Biergarten extension was opened hosting weekly events that bring the whole community together around local foods.

If you’re at all interest in the local food movement and passionate about knowing your farmer, you’ll love visiting the Home Sweet Farm Market while in town. Pick up some local snacks for a day of exploring the wineries and wildflowers, and check out this free vacation guide for other ideas of things to do in the area.
