Saddlehorn Winery

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

I enjoyed visiting and tasting the newest winery on the scene in Washington County:  Saddlehorn!  The owners of Saddlehorn are interesting, informative and have built a top notch sophisticated winery production/tasting barn with lots of granite, glass, stainless barrels and Texas furniture.  This winery is located not  too far from the ranch and is situated on beautiful country property between Brenham and Burton.  I can home with 2 bottles for  our sipping pleasure:  “Barn Red” and “Happy Trails White”!  You must make this a stop on your next wine tour of the Bluebonnet Wine Trail and add a stay at the ranch while here!

One of the best things of living on our family’s homestead ranch is the town that we are associated with and its citizens.   Brenham Texas is a town founded on family values and the fundamental core value of taking care of your neighbor and each other.  Most every weekend, you will find a fundraiser of some sort supporting everything from local youth, local churches to those in financial need.  I recently went (more…)

Herbs for Spring at Texas B&B Ranch

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Spring at our Ranch B&Bin Brenham, Texas is just around the corner and after this crazy, wild winter we are planning on a bumper crop of spring herbs. Some of our favorites include Aussie Sweetie Basil, African Blue Basil, Biergarten Sage, Lemongrass, Rose Pelargonium,  Dill, Fennel, Cilantro, Italian Flat Leaf Parsley, Mexican Mint Marigold and Lemon Thyme, to name just a few.   Our Bay Laurel trees have survived the frigid temps of this winter in  fine form, as well as the Thyme, Rosemaries, some of the Sages, Parsley, Fennel, Sweet Marjoram and more.  If you try any of these, they will definitely  get you started on the  road to flavor!  (more…)

Oktoberfest

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

October is officially over (by some 2 weeks…) and we are on our way to Thanksgiving! Our culinary group from the Pioneer Unit of the Herb Society of America, had an extraordinary Oktoberfest celebration! For those of you who have never had German food, you need to try it the next time you get the chance. The celebration was complete with German wine, German beer, German food and German history…..all of which was made even more fun by the company of good friends dining around the table together.

Tea Party

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Oh the joy of being a child!   While driving through town, I spotted a Tea Party ”parade” walking through downtown.  Curious, I stopped for information and a photo op.  The star of the parade and head guest of the party was  Della Jasinski who was celebrating her 4th birthday with a tea party with 7 of her closest friends!  The Tea Party Troupe (as I  dubbed them) had just left “Must Be Heaven” where the party originated and were headed for the local “Doll Shoppe” to continue with their fun!  Della and her mother graciously allowed me to take their photo!

New "olde town" bakery in Brenham!

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Downtown Brenham has a new addition to its historical scene….a true old fashioned, old time bakery complete with homemade bread (only on Thursday, though, so get it while it lasts!).   This bakery is one of newest additions housed in a historic downtown building, in addition to all the antique shops, art galleries, restaurants, boutiques and more.  The incredible architecture alone is worth a visit!  While logging some photos of this new establishment, one of the bakers came out to hand deliver a child’s birthday cake to the recipients waiting car!  It was a masterpiece!  Not only do their items look incredible but taste equally so.  You will want to sit a spell in their cozy leather “living area”, grab a cup of  “jo” , munch one of their delicious treats and enjoy the “local scene”.
