Civil War Brenham Heritage Museum

The Brenham Heritage Museum in downtown Brenham is a must see for all coming through Brenham and spending some time here.  It is a great stop for both adults and children alike with its’ rotating exhibits and wealth of information on history not only on Brenham, Texas but also Washington County and the great state of  Texas and how all that is intertwined.   A sampling of some of the great exhibits currently include:

1.)  Local History Gallery: The Heritage of the Birthplace of Texas

Our new primary exhibition chronicles the story of the entire county, including parts of Texas that are no longer part of Washington County.

2.)  “The Civil War: Rally ‘Round Our Flag, Boys!”

This exhibit will communicate the role of Texas in the Civil War, as part of an ongoing Civil War Sesquicentennial memorial.

3.)  Spanish Texas: Washington County Under Spain

This exhibit, a partnership between the City of San Antonio and the Spanish Governor’s Palace, describes the role Spain played as the supreme political body in Washington County.

Located at 105 South Market Street in downtown Brenham, the  Brenham Heritage Museum operates Wednesday: 1:00 pm–4:00 pm and Thursday–Saturday: 10:00 am–4:00 pm.  Call the museum at 979-830-8445 for more information.

After visiting the Brenham Heritage Museum, walk out the front door and start your self-guided walking tour and enjoy all the architectural beauty of our historic downtown buildings dating  from the 1800’s to early 1900’s.  Brenham’s historic mainstreet downtown was designated by the State of Texas and continues to uphold that designation through preservation.   Of  course, you’ll need a place to hang your hat during your trip to Brenham while  visiting the Brenham  Heritage Museum and Murski Homestead B&B is just a quick 5 minutes drive away.  You  can book your room directly online or call  us at 979-830-1021 for more personal service.

While in downtown Brenham, you’ll want to take advantage of the many boutiques, antique shops and shopping options.  All shops are  conveniently located around the square, so easy  walking distance and no hassling with moving the car.  One of our newest hot  spots to visit is Blue Bird Off The Square, an eclectic mix of vintage, artisan, accessories and more cool stuff.  You’ll also want to stop in at Antique Gypsy for some great antique finds and Tres Chic for cool couture.

With all the shopping and museum touring, you  will need to find a spot for lunch.  There are several options to whet your appetite…..seafood, pizza, gourmet, burgers, mexican, italian….again, all  within  walking distance!  Some to try include BT Longhorn Saloon, The Brenham Grill, Funky Art Cafe, YUMM Treats & Eats, and Smitty’s.  After lunch, stop in at Must  Be Heaven for a scoop of Blue Bell Ice Cream or Wired & Inspired Coffee Bar for a Cappuccino or Latte.

While in downtown, you definitely don’t want to miss some of the local historical attractions like the Simon Theatre, the official home  of our CVB and soon  to be convention center and Toubin Park –the scene of Brenham’s colorful past!  If that’s not enough, phone us at 979-830-1021 and we’ll help you  with your own itinerary including the Brenham Heritage Museum or just book  your  room and we’ll help you when you arrive!
