March 16th, 2016 by Pamela Murski

Things to do in Texas Hill CountryThe rolling hills and rivers of the Texas Hill Country are a sight to be seen, as the scenic views present a much different picture of the Longhorn State than what is often portrayed. There are an abundance of things to do in Texas Hill Country, keeping the most active and the most relaxed pleasantly occupied. Listing every hiking trail, winery and golf course here would be impossible, so we’ve narrowed them down to what we think are best attractions. Enjoy!

Brimming with guitars and banjos, the annual Kerrville Folk Festival is a can’t-miss family friendly music festival held in Kerrville. If you’re hungry, you can get a taste of Cajun cooking at the Fredericksburg Crawfish Festival, or see Johnson City’s creative side at the Last Saturday Art Walk.

Maybe one of the most rewarding things to do in Texas Hill Country is simply grabbing your backpack, strapping on your boots, and taking to the trails. Popular destinations include Colorado Bend State Park, Enchanted Rock Natural Area, and Garner State Park.

Horseback Riding

Experience Texas in authentic fashion, on horseback! Head to Bandera and sign up for one of the many rides offered in the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” or visit the Hill Country Equestrian Lodge, where you can ride, attend a clinic, and much more.

Take in the scenery as you tee off at one of the many great golf courses in central Texas. Head to Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco, or The Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Golf Club in Fredericksburg. If you’re in San Antonio, tackle the 27 holes at Hill Country Golf Club, voted the city’s best golf course by San Antonio Magazine.

According to Hill Country Outdoor Guide, the Texas Hill Country is the second most popular wine region in America, and Fredericksburg is a major contributor to the popularity. Taste the fruit of the many wineries that call the city home, like Torre di Pietra, where you can enjoy live music while touring the vineyard. The Pedernales Cellar in nearby Stonewall is another standout winery worthy of your time. We can say without a doubt that a trip to a Texas winery is one the tastiest things to do in Texas Hill Country.

Explore the caves of Central Texas, when you visit the Cascade Caverns, the Cave Without A Name, the West Cave, the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area, and that’s just a handful!

Mountain Biking

Austin is home to numerous mountain biking trails, but you can find them in San Antonio, Johnson City, Canyon Lake and more. Some of the camping and hiking spots mentioned in this blog are home to mountain biking trails as well. MountainBikeTx.com has a great list right here.

TexasHillCountry.com has a great list of prime fishing spots, and Hill Country Outdoor Guide agrees with them the best fishing in Texas Hill Country is in the Pedernales River Nature Park. Plenty of bass, among other varieties of fish, can be found here. The Guadalupe River is another popular central Texas fishing spot. Take the afternoon off and enjoy one of the most relaxing things to do in Texas Hill Country.

When an afternoon hike doesn’t give you your outdoors fix, then it’s time to grab the tent or (RV) and take a couple days off. Set up camp in the Hill Country State Natural Area, where you can mountain bike, ride horseback, and much more. The Guadalupe River State Park is another popular camping destination, whether you’re on the water or the trails. For those who prefer comfort with a side of camping, Canyon of the Eagles and By The River Campground are RV friendly and provide plenty of activities.

Have you ever seen pictures of fields of blue flowers, stretching on (seemingly) forever? You were probably looking at a picture of bluebonnet flowers, the most iconic plant in Texas Hill Country. Take a drive through the region, and you’ll see plenty of these beautiful flowers.
